Nasality perception of vowels in different language background

چکیده
Nasality is a distinctive feature of Bangla vowels. In this paper, we describe our study on nasality perception of Bangla vowels by Bangla and Japanese listeners. We discuss an interesting result that Japanese listeners perceive most Bangla nasal / ̃i/ as Japanese non-nasal /u/. As the amount of nasalization of / ̃i/ was increased synthetically, perception of this vowel change was found to be more categorical for Japanese listeners than that of Bangla listeners’ vowel perception.

Perception and Acoustics of Vowel Nasality in Brazilian Portuguese
This study explores the relationship between identification, degree of nasality and vowel quality in oral, nasal and nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese. Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued th...

متن کاملThe aerodynamics of vowel nasality and nasalization in Brazilian Portuguese
Brazilian Portuguese (BP) is thought to possess contrastive nasal vowels that are different from contextually nasalized vowels in its phonological system. Aerodynamic data (nasal and oral airflow) of 11 native speakers show that interspeaker variability is important in this language with regard to the nasal airflow ratio of tautosyllabic nasal vowels (TNVs; campo [kɐ̃ pʊ] ‘field’) and heterosyll...
متن کاملThe Effect of Vocal Loudness on Nasalance of Vowels in Persian Adults
Objectives: Nasality is one of the important parameters in pathology of voice resonance. Voice of normal adults has nasality to some extent. It appears that nasality, like other parameters of voice, can be affected by loudness which can be measured in experimental evaluations. This study was conducted to determine the effect of vocal loudness on nasalance of vowels in normal adults and to ident...
متن کاملPhonetic Sources of Sound Change: the Influence of Thai on Nasality
The phonetic realization of nasal vowels produced by Pwo speakers of different ages can vary. The present study investigated mid and low nasal vowels of Pwo speakers from Mae Hong Son province, Thailand. Due to the higher tendency of language contact with Thai, the younger group’s nasal vowels were expected to lose more nasality than the older group. The emergence of final nasal consonants was ...
